The second soundtrack from the second season of Fox's hit drama Empire collected songs from the eight episodes spanning the midseason return in March 2016 to the May finale. While the show and music remained popular with fans, the quality and immediacy had been on the decline since the peak of the first season. On Season 2, Vol. 2, there are some new advances, but overall, many of the songs sound a little too familiar. Profanity is included for the first time on Bryshere 'Yazz' Gray's 'Got That Work,' but it comes off as more shock tactic than artistic statement. Girl trio Mirage a Trois contributes a sparkling midtempo banger with 'Crown' and Serayah injects vulnerability into the breezy dance number 'Body Speak.' However, gems like these are underutilized in favor of a pensive, aggressive darkness indicative of the season's lingering dread. For the third collection in a row, Jussie Smollett is the MVP, saving much of the material with his effortless voice. From the funky Prince/Michael Jackson jam 'Freedom' to the plaintive duet with Bre-Z 'Shine on Me,' Smollett elevates his co-stars and producers. This is not to say that the other cast members are dialing it in; their talents are evident and they do what they can with the songs that were written for them by Timbaland, Ne-Yo, J.R. Rotem, and Swizz Beatz. This third installment is passable and may appeal to the fan faithful, but new viewers/listeners would be better off starting with the near-impeccable first season.
