One of the things that had really surprised me was that, the App Store wouldn’t allow me to download free iPhone apps without registering my credit card details. It seemed strange that even for downloading free iPhone apps; I was asked to submit my credit card details.

Well, Apple has moved along from there, and it now allows users to create an iTunes account without submitting credit card info.

The method is very simple, and I have listed down all the steps required after the break.

1. Open iTunes. If you do not have iTunes available then you can download iTunes from here.

Note: Please logout of your iTunes account if you already have one.

2. Go to the Right Hand section of iTunes Store and Click on any free iPhone app. I clicked on the free app called LOLriffic Stuff.

3. Clicking on the app will open up a description page, and then click on the ‘GET APP’ button.
This will open up a new window. Just click on ‘Create New Account’ button.

4. You will be greeted with the iTunes welcome message. Click ‘Continue’

5. Then you will see the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions page, click on the ‘,I have read and agree to the iTunes Terms and Conditions’ check box.

6. Now, enter the information required. Enter a valid e-mail address. Once you have entered the info, click ‘Continue’.

7. This is where you will see that you can select ‘None’ as an option under ‘Payment Method’. This option wasn’t available earlier.

8. Check the ‘None’ radio button and enter the personal information and then click ‘Continue’

9. You will receive a message informing you that a confirmation e-mail has been sent to the email address provided by you.

10. Now, check your email account, and you should have received the confirmation email from iTunes Store. Note: do check your spam folder, in case; you do not receive the email on 5-10 minutes.

The email will ask you to click on a link in order to activate your newly created iTunes Store account.

11. On clicking the link, you will be prompted to enter your account details in the login window. Please enter your email address and password.

12. You should be logged in straightway and can start downloading all the iPhone applications that are available for free without having to enter any credit card detail.

Many developers target the US App Store first and foremost, and due to licensing restrictions, sometimes it’s the only place you can download new apps for a long time.

To get access to those apps, you’ll want a US iTunes account – but that’s trickier than it sounds as Apple is not eager to accept international PayPal accounts or credit cards. You need to jump through some hoops to create a US iTunes account and add funds to it, but if you know how, anyone can download and enjoy apps from the US App Store.

Why You Can’t Just Change Your Account’s Country

Maybe your first instinct is to switch locales by changing the country of your current iTunes account. However, that’s not a good way to go. It may save you the trouble of creating a new account, but Apple doesn’t allow you to retain purchases made in another locale. In other words, you’ll lose access to products you purchased in your current locale.

However, switching between accounts does not remove already downloaded products from your device. So, you can keep managing local apps with your current account and manage US apps with your US account. Just switch accounts when you wish to update or install new apps from a different locale.

And, in case you were wondering, you can switch accounts on your iDevice by going to the App Store, scrolling all the way down and tapping your account name at the bottom. Afterwards, just sign in with the other account.

Create a US iTunes Account without a Credit Card

You’re normally required to enter a credit card or other US means of payment while signing up for an iTunes account. However, there is a way to create a US iTunes account without specifying any means of payment. You’ll need iTunes open on your Mac, or iTunes for Windows ready to go – once you’ve done that, go to the iTunes store. If you’re logged in with another account, first sign out. You can do this by clicking on your user name in the top left corner.

Next, switch to the US iTunes store. You can switch store locales by scrolling all the way down in iTunes and clicking on the flag icon in the bottom right corner.

Don’t try to create a new account just yet. To avoid entering a US credit card, we’re going another route. Go to the App Store section of iTunes and select a free app – any free app will do. You can select any of the apps on the main page, or browse the top free apps in the right sidebar. I’ve selected one of the most popular free games in the iTunes store at the moment of writing. On the app’s page, click the Free button to start downloading.

iTunes will notice that you are not logged in and ask you to either log in, or sign up for a new account (which is what you want to do). Select Create Apple ID to start the signup process.

Proceed as usual until you arrive at the payment screen. You’ll notice there’s an extra option under Payment Type: None. Select that option to keep from having to add a US credit card to your account. If you have a US iTunes gift card, you can redeem it here to add some initial funds to your account. You don’t have to do this now, we’ll be going over it in the next part of the article.

You’ll also need to add a US billing address. The easiest way to get this is by signing up for a free ViaBox account. ViaBox will give you a valid US address and telephone number and you can even use their service to order physical US-only products (for a fee). Technically, any valid US address will work in this field.

Add Funds with a Gift Card

As mentioned above, Apple does not accept any international credit cards or non-US verified PayPal accounts. If you’re only going to download free content from the App Store, that’s no big deal. We showed you above how to create an account without adding a US means of payment. If you do want access to paid apps, you’ll need some funds. The easiest way to do that is to buy a US iTunes Gift for yourself. These prepaid cards range from $10 to over $100.

As you might expect, you can’t buy these cards directly from Apple because (ironically) you don’t have any funds on your US account. Don’t try to buy them with your other account either, because these gift cards are linked to your region. Instead, you should buy from an unofficial reseller. There are many websites selling US gift cards and the like, but for the sake of safety I recommend using eBay. 2. With app stores beefing up VPN restriction in 2018 now masking your location is nearly impossible. My personal method for bypassing this issue has been getting US app store credit from giftcards2u.com, then I can access the US Netflix app from my iTunes Store and its thats it. (pretty sure this works for googleplay too) If you email the company about have trouble registering they help you set up and provide US info for you to use. Verifying your account is a little annoying but totally worth it cause its very secure and then after u do its fast AF to order more credit.

3. You actually can purchase gift card directly from Apple and have it sent to same email addeess you used for both AppleID and to buy gift card. It's strange, but any valid credit card will be fine, when you are buying gift card using your US Apple ID.

15. this article is really old and it no longer worked for me atleast.

    a) there is no 'none' option for charge card hence no way to use the gift card
    b) using a prepaid visa debit card did not work for me as those sold in Canada (shoppers) are ALL registered as Canadian cards, hence can only register postal codes not zip codes

    pooched as poodles get. wasted about 4hours total farting around...vpn (this part worked), temp USA address (worked, i guess.. viabox or myusaddress.ca), bought a US gift card online (worked), bought a visa debit card (did NOT work).

    I suppose I could try to get a visa debit card from US, that would perhaps take a zip code... but me thinks it's all for naught, as apple has gone to great lengths to keep the barbarian hordes out.

24. I think this is old article, earlier even I used to follow this trick. I guess recently Apple has changed their policy and you can not register with 'None'.

    • Mr Sunil,the catch is- do not try to create a new ID from withinn settings app itself,instead open the app store and try to download some app,now when it asks for an Apple ID,create one,now you see,same stting app opens to let you create Apple ID but with 'none' paying option this time. 34. aditional info - there is aditional IP chceck in some countries, not all. Apple seems to be very meticulous to get those credit cards numbers. So vpn may help.

    EVEN with free apps, and the presence of the NONE option... you can't proceed, it continues to advise

    If you select None, you will be asked to provide a payment method when you make your first purchase...
